The Australian Republican Movement has used Australia Day to reject knights and dames as “anachronistic and demeaning”, calling for Australia to become an independent republic.

“Australian honours should be honouring great Australians on merit, not birthright”, said Geoff Gallop AC, Chair of the Australian Republican Movement.

“Our identity is Australian, not colonial anymore,” he said.

David Morris, National Director of the Australian Republican Movement joined the program.
